Austin Energy operates one of the most progressive and unique municipal solar programs in the United States. If you live in Austin, you don't use traditional net metering. Instead, Austin Energy uses the "Value of Solar" (VoS) tariff. Understanding this system is critical to maximizing your financial return when going solar in the capital city.
Under traditional net metering, your meter simply spins backward. Under Austin Energy's VoS program, it works differently: Your home is billed for all the electricity it consumes at the standard tiered rates. Simultaneously, Austin Energy measures every kilowatt-hour (kWh) your solar panels produce and credits your account at a fixed, premium VoS rate. This credit is applied directly to your total bill, often zeroing it out completely.
Austin Energy offers a flat $2,500 rebate for residential solar installations. To qualify, homeowners must complete a brief solar education course, and the system must be installed by an Austin Energy participating contractor. SunBeam Innovations fulfills all the strict technical and shading requirements mandated by the utility to ensure your $2,500 check is cleared.
